For so long, I thought being a “good mum” meant non-stop pretend play, endless patience and feeling nothing but overwhelming love and gratitude.

You know, the barefoot-in-the-kitchen, apron-and-wicker-basket type.
She exists, but in animated form designed by Disney.

Turns out, my kids don’t care about handmade crafts or seasonal homemade snacks.
They care that I laugh with them.
That I’m not constantly on edge.
That I actually enjoy being their mum sometimes.

And apparently, one of the biggest predictors of a happy childhood is the happiness of the mum.
Not perfection. Just genuine contentment.

So I’m learning to stop performing motherhood
and start actually living it.
