When we launched at the world-renowned ACE Exhibition, I’ll be honest: I was terrified. We were standing in the middle of billion-dollar giants...HydraFacial, SkinCeuticals, Obagi...brands that have been around since before I was born. I kept asking myself: “Is anyone actually going to be interested? Or are we too niche?”

The answer was a packed house. We held lectures every hour, on the hour, for two days straight.

And every single time? Total capacity.

My heart is so full. It wasn’t just about the product; it was seeing how much practitioners want to learn. They want to do better for their patients. They want to be inclusive. They just needed the tools.

2026 is officially the "Year of Color" in clinics. 🎨

15 years as a Dr & cosmetic formulator. 10 professional-grade aesthetic treatments I’d never use on my face.
Not because I'm extreme, but because they weren’t designed for skin of colour.

In my years in the lab and clinic, I’ve seen how the "gold standard" for some is a "pigmentation trap" for Skin of Colour (SoC).

Social media loves a "glow up" transformation, but brown & black skin loves safety. Most permanent damage I see in my clinic isn't from "bad" products- it's from aggressive professional treatments that ignore the unique architecture of melanin-rich skin.

Here is what I personally avoid, and why 👇
1️⃣ High-Strength TCA Peels (30%+)
Formulator Truth: Trichloroacetic acid at high percentages is too aggressive. While it resurfaces light skin, it risks causing deep dermal inflammation in SoC. If you burn, you will pigment.

2️⃣ 1064nm Q-Switched Lasers (Aggressive Settings)
Formulator Truth: High-energy settings can lead to "confetti-like" hypopigmentation (permanent white spots). Melanin is a competitive chromophore; if the laser can't distinguish between the "target" and your natural skin tone, it hits both.
3️⃣ High % Glycolic Acid (The "Surgical Knife" Error)
Formulator Truth: I don’t use high-strength Glycolic professionally on the face. It’s a tiny molecule that penetrates too fast, creating "hot spots" of irritation. I prefer Mandelic or Lactic acid for a uniform, controlled exfoliation.
4️⃣ Aggressive Microneedling (Without Tyrosinase Inhibitors)
Formulator Truth: Needling creates trauma. For SoC, trauma = melanin production. I never needle without first prepping the skin with tyrosinase inhibitors to "sleep" the melanocytes.
5️⃣ IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) for Hair Removal
Formulator Truth: IPL is "scattergun" light. On darker skin, the epidermis absorbs too muchf energy, leading to first or second-degree burns.
6️⃣ Deep Dermabrasion
Formulator Truth: Mechanically ripping off layers of the epidermis triggers a massive inflammatory response. In SoC, this often leads to textural scarring and "rebound" hyperpigmentation.
7️⃣ High-Concentration Hydroquinone
Formulator Truth: While a "gold standard," using 4%+ Hydroquinone for more than 3 months without a break risks Ochronosis.
8️⃣ Alkaline "Brightening" Masks
Formulator Truth: Professional masks with a high pH (above 8) destroy the acid mantle. SoC already has lower ceramide levels; stripping that barrier leads to chronic sensitivity and dullness.
9️⃣ CO2 Ablative Resurfacing
Formulator Truth: This is often "too much" for SoC. The heat-affected zone is too wide, making the recovery process a minefield for PIH.
10️⃣ Generic "One-Size-Fits-All" Facials
Formulator Truth: If a treatment doesn't account for the fact that SoC has a more compact stratum corneum and more reactive melanocytes, it’s a gamble.
