As a pediatric OT, feeding therapist, and mom of two, family meals are something I prioritize whenever possible because they support so much more than nutrition.

When babies and toddlers watch us eat, they’re learning important feeding skills. They observe how we interact with food, try new foods, and respond to different tastes and textures. That’s modeling in action—and it’s one of the best ways to support picky eaters and encourage healthy eating habits.

Eating together also creates opportunities for connection. Family mealtimes allow us to slow down, talk, laugh, and be present together during busy days.

Over time, shared meals help establish consistent mealtime routines. Predictable routines can reduce mealtime stress and help babies and toddlers feel more comfortable at the table.

Most importantly, family meals help children feel safe around food. When there’s no pressure to eat and everyone is sharing the same experience, mealtimes become a space for learning, trust, and positive food exposure.

It doesn’t have to be perfect. Even sitting together for a few minutes can make a meaningful difference. 🤍

We tested this travel highchair for the past week with my 15-month-old, and while there were a few things I loved, overall it just wasn’t the right fit for our family.

✅ Easy to pack and store
✅ Quick setup and cleanup
❌ Very little postural support
❌ Didn’t position my toddler well at the table with the rest of the family
❌ The tray felt flimsy and was easily pulled off

As a pediatric OT and feeding therapist, positioning matters. A supportive seat helps kids stay stable, focus on eating, and safely participate in family meals. Although this seat is marketed for ages 6-36 months, I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable using it with a younger baby due to the lack of support.

As a feeding therapist and mom of two (3 years and 14 months), I want you to know this: you do NOT need to serve brand new foods every meal or everyday.

This breakfast is about as routine as it gets over here—homemade pancakes, yogurt, and blueberries. The same yogurt, the same frozen fruit, and a pancake recipe I make at least once a month.

Building variety doesn’t have to mean reinventing the wheel.

Some weeks it’s muffins, some weeks it’s pancakes. Some weeks it’s vanilla yogurt, some weeks it’s strawberry. Some weeks it’s blueberries, some weeks it’s banana.

Small, manageable changes are often more sustainable than constantly trying to create completely different meals. And when feeding feels sustainable for you, consistency becomes so much easier.

Feeding kids isn’t about offering endless novelty—it’s about creating a routine that works for your family while gradually exposing them to variety over time.

Stop buying the Miracle 360 cup if your goal is to teach open cup drinking. 👀

As a pediatric OT and feeding therapist, this is one of my biggest cup-related pet peeves.

The Miracle 360 cup works more like a sippy cup and doesn’t allow babies and toddlers to practice many of the oral motor skills needed for true open cup drinking, including lip closure, grading how much they tip the cup, and learning to safely manage liquids.

Open cups can be introduced around 6 months when starting solids, and most children should continue developing these skills throughout toddlerhood.

The 3 cups I’m sharing in this video support typical oral motor development, help teach real open cup drinking skills, and grow with your child—so you aren’t adding another cup you’ll eventually need to transition away from.
