Raising emotionally healthy children falls largely on the parents.

I recognize more than ever how important it is that I am paying attention to that.

So when I saw this statement- it stopped me in my tracks.

“Children are suffering from emotionally absent parents.”

It was the word “absent” that grabbed at my heart.

We can be physically present but mentally or emotionally withdrawn.

One of the major factors of a parent being emotionally absent is how much they are on their phone.

This is not a post about throwing the phone away, because I know a lot of good can come from us using our phones properly. It is a post, however, to encourage us to keep our phones in their rightful place.

Here are some things that I am going to try to work on so that I am paying attention to what matters most:

Put the phone down.
Put the phone in another room.
Take small breaks from the phone.
Take larger breaks from the phone.
Periodically fast from social media.
Set up automated responses for calls, texts, and emails after a certain time.
Turn off non-essential notifications.

Our children do not need perfectly unplugged parents, but they will benefit greatly from us giving them-

🌟Consistent eye contact
🌟Undivided attention
🌟Actively listening
🌟Truly engaging

Do you find yourself struggling with this?
Can you think of other ways to help all of us as parents balance it?

That went fast. Maybe a little too fast.

I’ve often told my older boys that if I could choose one season of time in my past to go back to, it would be when they were little.

I don’t remember a lot of it and was probably just surviving. In a sense of making sure they were fed, clothed, schooled, etc… which is all good but I so desire remembering moments. Special moments.

I would look at them a little longer, listen to their stories more intently, watch them “one more time”, smile at them more, and just enjoy being a boy mom and all that it entailed.

Our Stephen- congratulations, young man. I can’t wait to continue to truly watch you grow and become all that God has for you. These eyes are on you. Watching and just enjoying being your mama.

May our prayer in the beginning of your life become your reality- a man who walks with God, full of faith and the Holy Spirit… and power.

You have two parents and siblings that love you dearly and celebrate you!

Mama 🌷
Yes, you read that right.

Our large family will eat 95 percent of our meals at home.

If I take our monthly grocery budget and subtract it from what it could cost for us to eat every meal out, plus snacks, plus beverages, and tips- I have a total savings of $100,000+.

This is not a post to make anyone feel guilty for not cooking and eating at home most of the time because I know that is not possible for some. But it is a post encouraging you that there are ways to save money and the biggest one that is right before us is cooking and eating at home.

Not to mention the sweet time around the table together eating without being rushed, the shared fellowship, and bonding as a family.
