For anyone who missed it, I was on @c5news earlier this week, trying to inspire more people to donate blood due to the current national blood shortage 🩸 @givebloodnhs needs 200,000 new donors to come forward - if I can inspire just one of you to become a regular donar, it would be a massive achievement! 🙏🏼✨️ As a transfusion dependent Beta Thalassemia patient, who is reliant on 2 - 3 units every few weeks, I, of course, have a very vested interest. To all the kind and generous people I never get to personally thank, who take time out of their busy lives, to go and donate blood without even getting to witness the huge impact it can have - I am forever greatful! I wouldn't be able to live the life I do if it wasn't for them. Running the London Marathon with Beta Thalassaemia 🩸🏃🏻‍♀️ I have been training hard to tackle this challenge of a lifetime - running the London Marathon in aid of my incurable blood condition #BetaThalaseemia for @ukts2025 Running with Beta Thalassemia is like running at high altitude every single day, except my body will never acclimatise. This rare inherited condition stops my body producing enough haemoglobin, and I am dependent on transfusions every 2 weeks! This has made training even tougher... running with more ease at the beginning of my transfusion cycle, to struggling to keep my breath by the end. But I am determined to prove that having an incurable illness doesn’t have to hold you back. Your life doesn’t stop because of a diagnosis. I am doing this for all of us living with this rare, often overlooked condition. Thank you so much to every single person who has sponsored me. It's kept me motivated through my training, and I couldn't have done it without any of you! Happy National Blood Week! Sharing the less glamours side of my life because #BetaThalassemiaMajor is as much part of my journey in this world as everything else is. I don't always like sharing about my condition, but then I remind myself it's important for many reasons: To raise awareness and encourage people who are able to donate blood to do so in order to help people with conditions like mine. To normalise & make others feel better who are also living with long-term conditions. And to be true to myself and what I am going through, this is as much a part of who I am and something to be proud of as all of the good things. I often imagine what my life would be like if I hadn't been born with this condition... but then I remind myself that as difficult as it is at times, as tired & fatigued as I feel, as upsetting and challenging as it can be to deal with on a daily basis, it is also my super power! Maybe without it, I wouldn't bother to push myself so hard to achieve everything I do in order to not succumb to the constraints of my condition. It's certainly not as fun or light-hearted at times as I make it look on here... sometimes it can feel really heavy and hard. But that's life, and these challenges are what shape us and make us who we are. This National Blood Week, I not only want to give thanks to all those who help to support me on a daily basis: the doctors, nurses, and continued support from my family & friends. But also to give thanks to myself for never giving up and always pushing myself to do the absolute best I can with the cards I've been dealt. Please, if you can, I implore you to #GiveBlood - blood banks are often low, and people require blood transfusions for a whole host of different reasons... some people have lifelong conditions like mine, and others might need an emergency transfusion due to an accident.
