The Costco hot dog and drink combo is $1.50, and it’s been $1.50 since 1985. Somehow this hot dog has survived inflation better than half the American economy. Rent went up. Eggs went up. Streaming services keep inventing new tiers. The hot dog stayed strong.

And honestly, where else are you getting a decent meal for $1.50?

Let’s say the average hot dog combo outside Costco costs around $7. That feels fair now. That means every Costco hot dog saves you about $5.50.

The Costco Executive Membership is $130 a year.

So mathematically, you’d only need to eat around 24 Costco hot dog combos in a year to break even on the membership. That’s basically two hot dogs a month. Two little monthly hot dogs standing between you and financial victory.

This may genuinely be one of the strongest economic arguments for Costco yet.

Of course, there are other factors. The good: gas savings, cheap rotisserie chickens, bulk groceries, rental car discounts. The bad: impulse purchases, accidentally buying 40 granola bars, entering Costco for one item and leaving with a kayak.

That’s the thing about Costco. The membership can absolutely save you money. Costco also turns shopping into a psychological endurance challenge.
