On December 2011, the freighter Edro III was sailing under the flag of Sierra Leone and transporting plasterboard from the port of Limassol, Cyprus, to the Greek island of Rhodes. During the voyage, the weather deteriorated rapidly, and a severe storm blew the vessel off course. The vessel ultimately struck rocks approximately 10 nautical miles from Paphos. The damaged Edro III drifted toward shore and ran aground near Coral Bay. There were nine crew members on board. Fortunately, all were safely evacuated. After the storm passed, the ship's fuel was pumped out and the cargo was transferred to another vessel. Initially, plans were made to remove the wreck, but this was abandoned, firstly due to its proximity to protected sea turtle habitats, and secondly due to significant technical difficulties.
