🌈 Ding-Ding-Dong-Dong Rainbow House
Absence Space Residency Solo Exhibition

My childhood memory of Tainan is filled with countless ding-ding-don sounds.
Those sounds felt like tiny sprites hopping through different alleyways, tapping the everyday moments until they sparkled.

During my residency in Tainan, I painted many little houses—trying to piece together those sounds, the small shards of memory, and my grown-up imagination of what “home” could be.

🧜‍♀️The Tears of Stars in the Sea of Flames – Solo Exhibition in Korea

This exhibition is divided into two main themes: Haenyeo (female divers) and Masks.

In my works, I combined the image of the haenyeo with that of the mermaid. Much of my previous work has been inspired by fairy tales and mythology. The mermaid figure exists in many cultures around the world, each with different interpretations. In Taiwan, for example, mermaids may relate to water deities in folk belief, while in Western fairy tales, they often embody a romantic image of love and sacrifice. To me, the Korean mermaid is the living myth of the haenyeo themselves.

In addition to paintings, I also created three textile works titled “Prayer of the Haenyeo.” In these pieces, I depicted groups of haenyeo gathered together, symbolizing how they always dive as a community rather than alone. Before entering the sea, they pray together for protection from the ocean — a gesture of faith and solidarity.

The Mask Series was inspired by a trip I took to Andong, where I saw a traditional mask dance performance. It was fascinating to me because Korean masks are very different from those I’ve seen in Taiwan or Japan. Their exaggerated, expressive faces left a strong impression on me. This experience inspired me to create 120 mask paintings. Although traditional Korean mask plays originally carried social satire, for me, the masks became a way to express a wide range of human emotions. I also integrated Western elements, Taiwanese facial patterns, and Indigenous motifs into my works, aiming to create a cross-cultural narrative that connects different traditions and emotional expressions within one visual language.
