On 16th December 1775, only 5km from Whitchurch Silk Mill, Jane Austen was born. Jane grew up in the small village of Steventon, living there until 1801. After some time in Bath, Jane then returned to Hampshire in 1809, living in Chawton until 1817. Today marks 250 years since Jane's birth; a reminder of her endless inspiration. Growing up in rural Hampshire had a profound effect on Jane's imagination, and it's said that her countryside upbringing influenced many of her stories. When weaving a silk cloth, the silk travels through the loom, from the warp beam on one side to the cloth beam on the other. Once a determined length has been woven on the loom, it is then cut and unrolled onto a third beam.
